CA-36: Marcy Winograd over Jane Harman!

There's been a relative neglect of this race across the national left blogosphere, despite a lot of local excitement for Winograd. This is clearly an important race to the evil corporations backing Harman -- they're not sparing any expense. She dominates the airwaves thanks the largesse of her corporate sponsors. (Her ads have been running all over L.A., not just in the district.) If Harman wins it will be because the national progressive movement failed to understand -- as the bad guys obviously do -- how important this race is.

For voters in the South Bay: anyone who votes for Jane Harman is endorsing the Iraq War and the bankruptcy reform and deserves to be enslaved by the banks and defense corporations that Jane Harman represents. I hope for the sake of everyone who still wants to be free that the spineless don't make up a voting majority in CA-36 today.

We've been talking about it at Calitics (none / 0)

But, I think there's a general consensus that Marcy just doesn't have the resources to pull off this kind of upset.  But, I think if she could grab over 40% she'll at least make the statement that she was trying to make.

Where does this "general consensus" (none / 0)

come from?  I know Matt Stoller incorrectly said Marcy (my wife) had "almost no money", and the LA Weekly just as incorrectly said she had very little.  As I have posted elsewhere, however, the reality is that Marcy invested significant resources ($200,000 of her own money) and raised another $150K.  That's substantial, and was well-spent.  She could certainly have used more money and even more helpful would have been more time before the primary.  But people need to put their money where their ideals are, if they want something to happen, instead of just talking about it. The blogosphere helped, no question, but more could have been done.  Pardon me for being blunt, but there's no doubt about it being true.  I would be interested in hearing suggestions about how she could have gotten her message out to a wider audience willing to write checks. . .

Why hasn't she been talent-spotted before? (3.00 / 1)

I've no idea what her chances are.

But I heard Marcy on Air America on Sunday (a very rare listen for me these days, I'm afraid) and, while she was a little stilted to start with, she warmed to it in a way that you'd think she could get really good at it.

She made you want to hear more - as opposed to Pelosi, who makes you wish she would develop incurable laryngitis. (Joke.)

And, like I've said before, according to her photos, she's really attractive. And, as she was happy to state on the radio, born in 1953.

Which makes me wonder, Why has it taken so long to get her running for office?

Who in the Dem party has responsibility for talent-spotting?
If no one, why not?

Or perhaps it was suggested to Marcy before, but she choose to do other stuff instead.

I wonder how many candidates with potential are out there with some public visibility but who could be persuaded to take a chance on running for office it was it done right.

(Of course, if there was a flourishing Dem structure down to precinct level throughout the country, the problem would be less pressing. Because initial talent-spotting could be done locally and reports sent up the line.

Completion of that structure, I fear, is a good many years away. There needs to be something for the interim.)

The people spoke as they were told, having been given a script by the major defense corporations backing Harman.
